Sofia Norman, she/her (b. 1999), is a Swedish performance artist based in between Sweden and the Netherlands, working across choreography and sound.
With inspiration from the metal scene, mystical texts, and forgotten folklore, she explores deconstructed song-making and oral choreography. Searching for undesirable sonic forces erupting from the gut. Together with the Lithuanian artist Nikita Berezko, she formed the duo Hoarse Girl, a post-punk heavy metal noise act. Their practice is a blend of harsh vocals, noise, Baltic/Nordic mourning rituals, repurposed objects, and text. Serving as
choreographic tools for the distorted dance of the throat.
Sofia attained her BA in dance at ArtEZ University of the Arts. Her work has been shown at Dansateliers (Rotterdam), Frascati Theatre (Amsterdam), Amsterdam Fringe Festival, Musis & Stadstheater (Arnhem), Nexus Festival (Amsterdam), Mime Fabriek (Amsterdam) and more.
Hoarse Girl first formed in the summer of 2025 at Performing Arts Forum (PAF) in France, where they initiated a joint research into monstrous vocality. This research was further developed at Platform Nexus (Amsterdam) and is currently supported by the Future Storytelling Lab (Zwolle).
